Early childhood education is a rewarding career for people who are passionate about helping children learn and grow. If you want to work with pre-school and early elementary school children, the Child Development Careers program at South Central College will prepare you to work in a variety of early childhood and educational settings. After completing the Child Development Careers program, many graduates work as early childhood teachers, directors or site coordinators, school system paraprofessionals or as independent daycare providers.

This program is focused on specific areas of study that are pertinent to a strong academic foundation of early childhood theory and practice. By learning and understanding the developmental milestones and maturity markers that occur as a child grows, you will be able to confidently help lead children in their early influential years. The program’s purpose also includes teaching skills like positive behavioral guidance, health and safety guidelines for young children and assessment of children and their environments.

At South Central College, you will benefit from the many advantages that a community college has to offer while working toward your degree. Smaller class sizes, individualized attention from experienced instructors and greater affordability are just a few reasons that make SCC an excellent college choice.

Should you decide to continue on with your education after graduating from SCC, the Associate of Science degree in Child Development Careers offers a seamless transfer of credits toward a Bachelor’s degree in a Birth to 3rd Grade Licensure program at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The AAS degree in Child Development Careers can be transferred seamlessly to the University of Wisconsin- River Falls to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, with or without certification.
