This fall, South Central College (SCC) will introduce a first-of-its-kind language course at its North Mankato Campus. “Somali Language 1” is the first such course offered at a community college in Minnesota.

“This course not only provides a basic introduction to the language, but also the Somali culture,” said SCC Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences Judy Shultz.

Somali Language 1 is for students at all levels, from those with no previous experience with the language to those who have some familiarity. The course will emphasize sensitivity to cultural differences, with students learning from simple texts with cultural topics to develop their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing Somali.

The college is offering the course on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. in hopes of making it available to working individuals who may interact with Somalis on a regular basis.

Fall semester begins on August 27. Registration for Somali Language 1 (SOLA100) is now available at www.southcentral.edu/registration.
